Hello all you revolters!!!!! ;D I'm putting this on here instead of the beeb I have managed to keep 3 Rhus sucker plants alive. They are between 6 - 10 inches tall. Can anyone tell me how long it will take them to reach tree like proportions. My neighbour has one about 8 ft tall, but I'm not sure how long it has been there, I thought they were quite quick growers, does their growth resemble that of a buddleia? Many thanks

Pretty quick but yours are only babies at the moment, you should see an acceleration next year. I completely cut mine down 4 years ago and it is now HUGE. Beware of the suckers though - you have to keep them under control a bit.

Thanks for the replies Dee and 4pygmies. Are you both under the same gardener, must be a bit of a squash! Yes, aware of the sucker habit and intend keeping potbound. I was hoping it would just take a few years to get big so it can go in my planned jungle area for the children. Thanks to advice learned on another site [wonder where that was....] have informed my neighbours with a sucker problem how to get rid. Such a striking tree, I think, shame it has such an annoying habit. Regards

Hi dee I just happened to notice that you were both Under Gardeners. I posted that before reading the thread about the titles and stars you achieve thru' posting lots of messages, so looks like that joke has already been done a hundred times! I myself am just a New gardener, so haven't reached that attainment yet! Sorry for any confusion. <oops smiley>

Jonah! How very dare you? But if it's Chris B - Dee is welcome to him - they're only chatting about bulbs in a more comfortable condition anyway....I wouldn't like his wetsuit! Re Rhus - I have a tree planted in front of the kid's swing - when it gets too big they swing at it with vigour and snap it back - cruel but fun! You could always play at "machete in the jungle" when it gets over the top - wooden for kids, real for you!

My Rhus has been in 15 years, I only remember that because I planted it when my son was born...I try to commemorate important occasions. Its approx 15 feet tall and according to what I read should not get much taller, <hopefulsmiley> Occasionally I dig up the suckers and give them away with appropriate warnings. I particularly like the spring colour and it colours up beautifully in autumn too. I cut off low branches to raise the canopy.

When they come up in the lawn at least they are soft enough to mow off.
