We were in Harlow Carr about three years ago October time & there was this strong toffee smell, well they make toffee in Harrogate but somehow that didnot seem to be the answer, we followed our noses & found the above mentioned tree loosing its leaves & smelling wonderful. We ordered one last year, planted it this Spring and the first few leaves are just starting to go golden & the smell is delicious and not fattening either.Any other good smelly trees?

One of the nicest scented is the black wallnut (juglans nigra) but you need to remove the leaf and crush it to get the scent.
At present, although strictly a shrub, Eleagnus is in flower and boy is that sweet smelling. I've also got Osmanthus x hetrophyllus which is devine too.
Never knew that about Cercidiphyllum.....i've got 2 at work so i'll look out for that.
