I'm dead chuffed tonight as I found a gorgeous Spindle tree in the woods! Smallest daughter went to a BD party to a house in the middle of the nowhere and I remembered that I'd seen a Spindle somewhere about there several years ago. I took the dog into the woods for a stroll and there it was! (Still got functioning memory sometimes then, thank the Lord Harry!!). They are fairly unprepossessing trees a lot of the year but they have the most gorgeous bright pink and orange seed pods and lovely Autumn colour. And there were lots of seeds on it so I helped myself...dunno if they'll grow from seed easily but I shall give it a go. Anybody ever done it?

I've had success in growing hawthorn from seed/berries I have collected - I set approx. 10 seeds but only 3 germinated

Good luck with the Spindle - it's one of those hedgerow trees that has a 'history' as well as standing out in the autumn... it's nice to have an individual with character.
btw - they're generally a 'chalky area' find. If you get to plant out, choose a well-drained patch of Your Norfolk - the sort of place a beech would do well...

I've tried a few times, no succes but I did buy a bush/ tree whatever for 20p and it has grown and grown and just started to berry. Would you think that pink and orange could be so near to each other.
