I was reminded yesterday when walking round Kew, what a divine scent Eleagnus has when in flower. I think it is often forgotten as a scented shrub, the flowers are pretty insignificant but have a strong scent. It's a tough shrub also & the variegated ones are very attractive.

Beejay
I have been meaning to reply to this for a few days, I have never noticed a scent from my hedge but am now intrigued as to what it smells like. I probally thought the scent was coming from elsewhere.

Eleagnus is indeed a magnificently scented shrub usually throughout september and the smell can be picked up many yards away.
Among some of the other delightful shrubs with very strong scent are Osmanthus (Burkwoodii, Delaveyii and Hetrophyllus) and Sarcococca sp.
Another unusual, slow growing but highly scented shrub is Corokia cottoneaster which smells of playdough ;D Andy

Have you ever broken open a berry of Gaultheria procumbens?
Smells just like Germolene!
