Hi all, I have a Sambucus Nigra "Black Beauty" and I have also got a "Black Lace". They are currently in pots but I wish to plant just one in a space in the border. If you had to chose just one what would it be? Sara

What stunning shrubs Elders are. If it was me, i'd plant the black beauty in the border.....as long as you remember that they can easily get to 20 feet high and just as wide if allowed to.
Not too sure why i'd choose black beauty....probably because it looks that bit more robust where as black lace is delicate and just suits a tub.
Shame you don't have more room as the black beauty would look awesome planted in between a golden elder and a varigated one.

I was thinking of the hard chop every year or so to keep it under control. Sara

Hi Sara
Not a hard chop every year or so, definitely every year. I would go for Black Beauty

hi sarah, mine is in a border where the soil isn't very deep but it easily made 6ft. i've trimmed it back slightly for the winter but i'm going to cut it right down like you'd do with a buddlia next spring and then periodically pinch out the growing tips.

Good choice - I think it's the best one - I have it in my island 'hot bed' with Crocosmia 'Rowalane Yellow and Phygellus 'Moonlight in front of it and Lilium pardalinum (they grow through it) on the other - its a beautiful shrub.
