Hi Just wondering if any of you use any programs for finding spyware and adware on your PC and if so, what ? I used to just rely on my Norton Internet Security 2006 to scan for spyware but I'd noticed recently that my PC had been getting slower. I spoke to my next door neighbour (an IT professional)and he recommended something called Spybot Search & Destroy (which can be downloaded free if you google for it). I downloaded it yesterday and ran a spyware search on Norton which didn't find anything and then ran the new Spybot program, which found 7 items of spyware on my PC I've cleaned them off my PC and its now running a fair bit quicker. I've also got Lavasoft Adaware SE personal, which regularly finds items of adware on my PC, even though I scan and clean it about once a fortnight. Anyone who hasn't got any spyware or adware protection might be surprised at how much is on their PC, especially if your PC is running slowly. The only problem is, you have to be careful what you download because some of the programs themselves contain spyware and are programmed to ignore it. FA x

I have Norton System Works on my Computer, plus Spybot and Adaware which I run every Sunday morning to make sure all is OK.
I also have a Linux hardware Firewall before my PC and I use XP Pro.
Since getting the hardware Firewall, I have only once had a little trouble when the Linux Firewall Port number was hacked but it did take 2 years for that to happen and they still did not get into OH's and my computers. As our Computers are Networked, I am also careful what I download.
After that I then updated the Firewall, changed the Ports and once again I have not had any problems for the last 18 months.
Should I get something it is because I downloaded it and not because something can get in.

I used to have Norton (Symantec) anti-virus and firewall, but I also found that it was slowing my PC considerably. In August 2004 I had a very bad spyware attack on my PC which took me three weeks to clear completely. I also found Spybot to be very effective, so much so that I have also installed it on the PCs at work. I lost interest in Norton in July 2005, having purchased the 2005 version of the software, and experienced all sorts of problems loading it on to my then Windows Me PC. Eventually I gave up on Norton and based on online recommendations opted for Zone Alarm Security Suite, which was on special offer at Amazon UK. Coincidentally it is on offer again now... www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss_w_h_/202-7749439-4051067?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=zone+alarm&Go.x=13&Go.y=15Zone Alarm is so much easier to work with than Norton and takes up only a fraction of the space. There are regular full suite downloads available during the year, as well as the virus definition and anti-spyware updates. My package offers Firewall, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, and also protection for the main Instant Messaging programs. It also monitors incoming and outgoing email. Since switching to ZoneAlarms I have had no successful incursions of any kind onto to my PC, which is more than could previously be said for Norton. I don't use Spybot at home - there's no need for it.

Hi guys, i use Norton Symantec (just cos it came with my PC) it does need a lot of space to run...in addition you need Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE Personal and Spyware Blaster and the latest MS Defender (make sure you subscribe to live update). Between them they catch most things that try and bombard you and apart from Symantec the rest are all free and can be downloaded from internet by googling for them. Make sure you check for updates before you run weekly or after a heavy surfing session and that should keep you tickety boo. Forgot to say make sure you defrag too...it'll tell you if it doesn't need to be done after analysis.
