Hi
Been having a bit of a tidy up today and have removed a lysmachia "firecracker" (bloody thing was taking over the world !).
I need to put something in its place and I'd like it to be something that grows tall (ish) and is vaguely columnar (is that the right word - "looks like a column" is what I'm trying to say).
Any suggestions ?

How tall Andy? I love Berberis Helmund Pillar as a little column. There is also a bright green columnar berberis but can't remember the name at the mo.

There is also a columnar yellow leaved beech. Can't remember the name of it off the top of my head but I can find out for you if you'd like!

An obelisk with a clematis. There are plenty now that only get to 2 metres high so won't go mad. Have a look at Hendryetta, Arabella, Princess Diana, Silver Moon, Sunset etc

Beejay - about 6ft would be nice
Snowy - yes please !
Obby - thanks. I've already got 2 clems in that border so I was looking for something a bit different.

Hiya Beefy ;D. Fagus Dawyck Gold, but make sure it's been grafted onto dwarf root stock otherwise you'll end up with a 30ft column instead of 7ft ;D . If you have trouble getting hold of one then we are getting them in in Spring. If you can hold on that long I could send one to you! S x

Remember that being a Fagus it responds well to being clipped. You could end up with a beautiful dense column! You really need to see it in the flesh.......it's absolutely beautiful and the leaves are really soft and downy and the most fantastic colour......yellow in Spring, lime green in Summer and gold in the Autumn. Hope this helps!

I'll need to see a dwarf one in the flesh. I googled it and only found the big ones, which would be too big.
Thanks FA x
