i believe they (ht's, floris, shrubs etc) need cutting back soon to protect against wind damage, but i really don't want to as they're still flowering like mad!

Hi stezario, Yes, it is advisable to give roses a protective trim but I think perhaps towards the end of October would be a better bet. So long as it is not a frosty day when you do the pruning, there should be no problem. Spruance

Hi Stezario!
The theory of trimming roses back before the onset of winter is that this reduction of top-growth helps prevent them rocking around in the soil during the high winds of winter, thus exposing the roots & leaving them open to frost damage. Reduce the top growth by about a third. As Spruance advises, late Oct or early Nov would be the best time to do this.
The same principle can be applied to other shrubs such as buddleia.
