Hi all,
I've just noted what I think is mildew (white powdery stuff) on my climbing rose; it was only planted this spring and has not thrived at all. I don't want to use chemicals, but I've read that this stuff can spread throughout the garden, and am worried. On the net I came across the following organic recipe:
1 teaspoon of Baking Soda 2-1/2 teaspoons of Vegetable Oil 1 Gallon of water
Apparently you mix this together, strain it and spray it on the roses.
Has anybody had any experience with this or any other organic solution? Or would it be safer just to get rid of the rose bush to protect the rest of the garden? Any advice gratefully received ... cheers ...

I use 1 part milk to 9 parts water, in a spray, use ever 5-7 days and it works brilliantly against mildew.
It slightly changes the pH of the leaf, making it unsuitable for the mildew to grow and also, somehow boosts the plants own immune system.

Dee, thanks ... I'm off to do that now! Nearby plants include a honeysuckle, passionflower and shrubby salvia ... should I spray them too as a prophylactic? Cheers ...

I found the mildew remedy last year whilst desperately looking for a solution to the mildew on my Acer Platanoides 'Crimson Sentry'. The tree had been covered with mildew for two years running, but following frequent dousings with the milk and water solution, this year it is completely midew free.
So yes, remarkably, it does work. ;D
