I planted three new clems out earlier in the year, all flowered, but 2 are flowering again - a tangutica (yellow) and ville de lyon (purple).
I was resigned to their finishing, but now would like to know: is this a "strange year, 2006" bonus, or can I look forward to two flushes of flowers every year?
Anybody know??

Morning OMS! It's quite normal for group 2 clematis to flower twice in a year but the two you have mentioned are group 3s and this is about the right time for them to flower. My tangutica is looking fabulous at the moment and I would expect your VdeL to have a few flowers but be finishing off for the year. As they are young they were probably forced by the grower - it's easier to sell plants in flower than just in leaf - and the plants are now trying to adjust to the seasons now they are planted outside. Don't worry about them: prune them properly in late spring and they should behave normally next year!

My Tangutica too is still in flower and will continue until frost has it. Funny how I thought it always was a performer from July till the end of summer. No early blooms because of pruning I think. I have to because it would look like an unused crows nest in no time. It is my favourite because so few clems survive my garden. This one is happily rooted in the gravel and seems ok with all the winter wet. Dutchy

Thanks for that, Plocket, dutchy, I'm more a tree, shrub and veg type of old gardening cove, so your knowledge on this is well received...
