Hi all,
after dithering around for months, our builder is finally ready to start on our raised bed (front railed garden) in a fortnight. I have lots of cuttings growing in preparation for my new toy (it's going to be filled with fuchsias and a yet-to-be-decided-on climber, with bulbs and annuals for seasonal colour, and something to tumble over the sides). But ... do I fill it with topsoil, or compost, or a mixture? Since it's basically a massive container, what will give the plants the best long-term chance? I'd be grateful for any advice ... cheers ...

I would mix it up - topsoil, garden compost and some grit at the bottom for drainage. Fill it almost full and water it then leave to settle overnight before planting in case you need to add more.

Thanks for that, Obelixx ... I'd better get cracking and order. Presumably I can use gravel at the bottom instead of grit? - they'll be removing loads of gravel and there's no point wasting it ... cheers ...

Thanks! Can't wait ... I really am as excited as a kid with a new toy. When you have a tiny garden, every extra bit of planting space is a huge bonus ;D ... cheers ...

Hi canarycreeper, How is your raised bed going? Have you decided what you are going to plant in it yet? Sara

Hi Busybee (or is it Chuckles) ... they did finish the bed and it looks lovely (reclaimed Dolphin's Barn brick - really mellow), but nobody in Dublin delivers topsoil and/or compost - one is expected to have a car!!! But a friend who lives in the country is reclaiming a field currently used for grazing horses for his garden, and has promised me a van load of horse-poo-enriched topsoil in the next couple of weeks. Then the fun stuff starts! ... thanks to both of you for remembering ... cheers ...

You can call me by either name CC I don't mind. Lottie started the Chuckles bit off from my toddler pic in the Photo compy, now used as my avatar. I loved it so incorporated it into my board name. Glad you got it done, the filling is a job in itself. I've been struggling to fill 6 raised beds in my gdn, one left to do Nice to see you back CC

Hi Chuckles .... nooooo, it's been delayed week by week, and no-one around here delivers topsoil (we don't have a car, although in fact for this you'd need a van) ... so the raised bed is still empty in front of the house, looking very peculiar, and all the bulbs I'd bought for it are probably mouldering ... ok, moan over ... cheers ...

Finally! Decided to give up on getting anything delivered and hired a courier to bring in the compost and topsoil. Spent a very happy afternoon planting it up ;D Thanks for the encouragement, everybody ...
