..... or anyone else who can help. I have been looking at the link you gave me and then noticed at the bottom of some of them it says 'suitable for hedging'. This got me to thinking that there is a space where I would like to put a hedge and its only 3 metres long. So my questions are.... How many plants for 3 metres? Would it be best to grow just the one type or a couple? At the moment, I like the look of Quatre Saisons and Comte de Chambord (sp?) Would these be compatible? Thanks already ;D Skarloey.

If you look on the site, you will see also the size of the bush, that is the eventual size the bush will get. This can be helpful when you plan your hedge.
I am not too good to old garden roses and I am sure Fozzie will give you the right answer. If your are looking for fragrance I would recommend along all the wonderful roses Fozzie has recommended Rosa damascena 'Trigintipetala' ('Kazanlik) which is grown in Bulgaria for rose attar. A german company has opened a distilery here in Romania and the same rose is cultivated now here too.

Skarloey,
is the hedge to be functional or as an aesthetic feature. You should also consider width and height requirements. If your need is for a functional hedge. I would go for, trying to keep to your colour scheme, Roseraie del'Hay and/or Belle Poitevine. They are both Rugosa Roses and therefore are very tough, dense and prickly, they will repeat flower over a long period, have good Autumn colour and good hip display. Word of caution they are strong growers and will get to 4 foot across and 5 foot high if you let them, they can be kept in check by cutting back to your required dimensions. If it was me I'd use both alternating every 30-36 inches depending on density required. Let them grow on for a couple of years to get to the dimensions you want then keep them in check as said above . Late Feb is a good time to cut them back. For an orrnamental hedge your selections are fine although I would not mix them. They will get to approx 3-4foot in height and about 2-3 foot across, so you will need a significant number to create the hedge at approx 18 nches apart or say 24 inches for a loose hedge.
I'll throw two more in for you Maidens Blush Great and Empress Josephineagain trying to keep your colours preference. They are slightly larger and you would, therefore, require fewer plants.
Hope this helps

Hello Rosefan and Fozzie,
Thanks for your replies. I like the idea of repeat flowerers Foz and I've looked up Belle Poitevine and 'Trigintipetala' 'Kazanlik. Now I know I should find plants I like myself but I also like the idea of using the ideas of my 'virtual' friends. Is that very soppy? ;D Will they work together or should I just use one or the other?
I'm sorry for all the questions but I really know nothing about roses and hugely value your opinions.
Skarloey. ;D

Skarloey, no probley re questions, I enjoy looking back into my Rose books and files. I am prone to get carried away reading the articles. which is why sometimes it seems to take me a long time to reply. Am still finding out new things on the way! With regard to your qustion. They will both get to roughly the same size approx 5ft x 4ft, with Belle being a little more vigerous. Also being a Rigosa the stems will be covered in small spines/thorns, so care needed when handling. With Kazanlik, as Rosefan said you can use the petals in home made pot pourri. I would have no problem using them both, however, with your space of approx 10 foot I would plant 2 of each about 3 foot apart with the middle 2 being Belle thereby keeping her thorny stems away from the ends of the hedge. There is a differnce between the look of the leaves. They will both have 5,7,9or maybe more leaves per leaf stalk. Belles' should be a lighter green and look "Crinkly" (best way I can describe them). Kazanlik will have darker, smoother leaves. I do not think the pinks will clash, but then, being a male it would not bother me anyway!!
