- Symphytum Grandiflorum - which I think in English is Comprey.
I was given this in spring by a friend - well she was then........... until I found out how much of the garden this plant takes up.........
It may seem a silly question but how big does it get and do the roots go deep - am I looking at a mint situation where I need to plant it in a bucket or can I just keep digging it out?
Also what do I use it for - or should I say how can it be used.

Comfrey has a tap root which is LONG! But it doesn't necessarily spread too far. I have a clump growing under my silver birch stand which hasn't really expanded too much in 15 years! It is a very pretty plant woodland plant with lovely little bell like flowers and is fantastically good in gardens. It has the most protein found in any plant and is a wonderful compost improver and plant feeder. The leaves rotted down in water and diluted (1part comfrey liquid to 10 parts water) are a good foliage spray and can be watered directly onto potted plants soil as a fertiliser (it stinks but there's no gain without pain). I cut down the leaves in Autumn and put it in my raised beds and my compost bins. I always line my runner bean trenches with its leaves. It's wonderful stuff Rosefriend!
