Hia! We are back from David Austin's!!! They didn't have James Mason, Dusky Maiden or Mrs Oakley Fisher in stock which was rather disappointing, so we had a good look around and with some advice bought Bright Smile and Anna Ford to go in containers outside the hopefully soon to be built porch. OH was rather keen on Rose of Picardy when he saw it but we decided it might be a bit big for the containers that we had, so......... We went and had lunch in the cafe while we had a think about other possibilities. We decided we could dig up some rather tired looking grasses in the front garden and then we'd have space for Rose of Picardy, and possibly three or so more roses in the future!!! See what's started? ;D So OH bought RoP too and we stopped off at a Wyevle where we bought lots of John Innes No.3. Back at home LP and I potted up the two small patio roses while OH dug a big hole for RoP, and now they are all planted. Obviously the two potted roses aren't in place yet but they are in the front garden getting a feel for where they will finally be sited. They should get enough sun because it's a south facing front garden but there is a tall hedge of conifers sheltering them from the really hot afternoon sun of the summer. Hopefully they will be happy and give us years of pleasure. Thank you again for the advice given - I might be asking for suggestions for more small roses to go with Rose of Picardy in the front garden soon. They did say that we could choose from more plants if we bought them mail order which means that we could still get James Mason etc.

Hi Plocket
Well I am pleased that you have found something that you like - it doesn't matter what kind of Roses (or Clems) one buys - the main thing is that you like them and they bring you pleasure.
How's about some pictures?

Hi Plocket
Lovely - you have chosen well - and just think of the perennials and clems that would go with them - that will bring pleasure to some dark winter evenings won't it?

Hi Plocket. Hope you all had a lovely day for your anniversary. How many years is it? I find it hard to believe we will have been married 40YEARS next year. I remember when my in-laws had been married that long they were OLD. We are definately not OLD. Mind you I was a child bride. Janet

Hia Janet! Not nearly as long as you - only 6 years! I got married later on in life! We had a lovely day thank you! We went to David Austin's Rose Nursery, as you've probably gathered (I'm uploading photos now and if any are reasonable I'll post them on a new thread!), and had a lovely lunch there after choosing our roses and walking round the garden. We stopped off at Wyevale for a very brief visit on the way to Waitrose, and then came home. It's been great.

Sorry you did not get first options, I would have thought that for such an emminent customer, as yourself, an under gardener would have been despatched to the growing fields to lift them for you. Dont forget.. if you are doing ant pruning, stems that are 4-6 inches, remove lower leaves push into container or ground next to parent and waiot for extra plant(s) thereby reducing overall costs. The patio plants will possible strike better than RoP, also reduced profit for DA as they (Patio plaants) produced by other breeders so payments will have to be made... Have fun with and enjoy your Roses. Foz
PS I've got Nelly in flower ,but by no means at her best, likkewise with 3 Roses

Hia Fozzie! I'm giggling about the under gardener going for my plants!!! Apparently they are available online as root-stock so we might well get at least one of the ones you suggested Fozzie - at the moment the wish list comprises of James Mason, Morning Mist and Moonbeam. That could change though! Good grief I want to make sure the plants are established and healthy before I start doing cuttings!!! Nice idea though I hope I chose good plants - they were all cut back to about 6 inches and had at least 5 stems of a bigger base, and they all had tiny reddish buds forming on the stems. Did I do right? Hurrah for Nelly! I've not got many clems in flower at the moment although Silver Moon is hanging in there, and Guernsey Cream has put out a few little attempts at flowers (considering how big the flowers usually are!) but Wisley Cream has some buds - and that reminds me that I must go out and take another look at it soon! I'll post photos when the time is right Fozzie, and did you see the photos of my visit? Take care, Px

Yes their condition sounds good and healthy to me, why I mentioned the pruning bit is that when I get my bare root plants they need pruning back to 6 inches, as yours are now, at time of planting. The resulting cuttings are then shoved in the ground!
Look forward to pics

I'll try and remember to do cuttings next year then Fozzie - thanks for that! There's no point taking photos at the moment is there?
