Hi Plocket. Something has happend to alpina "Willy" It is just a mass of very dead looking twigs. Is it worth giving it a bit of a cut back? Was doing really well earlier this year and the clems on either side are just fine. Thanks Sara

Hia Sara! Noooooooooo! Don't cut it back: it's a group one clematis that doesn't really like or need to be cut back. At this time of year it will look dead but leave it as it is and it should grow back fine next year. Some clematis die back earlier than others and also the position in your garden/how much sunlight they get will also make a difference. I would just leave it be and wait for it to come to life in the spring.
Do you want me to take any photos of my dead looking alpinas to compare and hopefully reassure you?

There you go Sara - two very dead looking alpinas. I'm not worried about them at all, and I recall that they were the first to die back. I hope the pictures reassure you!
