This lavendar is really past its best, can I cut it right back down to the ground? if so, whens the best time of year to do that?

I'd cut it about half back....the best time to do it is after it's flowered although i'd probably do it now if it was mine.

I understand that lavenders don't like being cut back into old wood, so yes, probably about half would be about right

I cut my lavender (Hidcote) back in the spring for 3 reasons (I have about 70 plants at the front of my house BTW). 1. The birds can feed on the seed heads through the winter 2. They can self seed which gives me new plants 3. The plants look better through the winter IMO and have better protection from the winter weather.

Thanks trunkyjo - but nothing is in flower now so it doesn't look quite so good, garden wise at the moment - but inside is immaculate of course ;D
