This is outside my kitchen window, is it a bay tree? its a very odd shape, can I prune it back to a better shape? if so, when should I do that?

It's a Laurel TJ.....Prunus Laurocerosis. They do have small, white plumes of flower but the shrub is grown more for it's hedging and "filling in" atributes.
They can be cut back seriously hard....I've got some pretty big specimens at work wich are 25' tall trees and i'd have no hesitation cutting them back to a stump....at any time of year.
We do all our pruning in winter and i've cut back these at all times of year just to shape them up a but. Just make sure there's no frost or snow on the plant when pruning.

hi trunkyjo, i have prunus "otto luytken" in the garden and the growth pattern on yours looks the same. despite giving it a good pruning last year it has put nearly all of the growth back on.

Just like to accentuate that your tree is NOT edible TJ! The culinary Bay is Laurus nobile...if you put leaves from any other sort of Laurel in food you'll be VERY ill - I'm sure you know that but just wanted to make sure everyone reading this did too!
