Yes that should work I was going to say weave some of the stems from side to side on the side frames of the arch, if that makes sense but i think thats what you are doing. All you are trying to do is force secondary side shoots on the main stems as its on those secondary shoots that the flowers should appear. If I remember correctly its not a heavily thorned, think I've just invented a word, rose. So maybe not too much pain involved.

Had another go at the Iceburg today, have really cut it back hard in some places, I felt really mean as there were loads of shoots but it will do it good. Guess I may not have as many flowers this year but it will do it good.

It will be ok. They are tough old things these roses, all you have to do now is train the new shoots to go where you want them to go, do not be worried about removing any "free spirits" that wander off in what you consider to be the "wrong" direction. Have fun

Thanks Fozzie it really helps to have your advise and support on these things, Iv'e never had the courage to really get in there and give it a really good prune. It looked lovely last year but was starting to get a bit top heavy and was in need a good sort out. Thanks again

It looks good Chuckles. To be honest with you I try to avoid pruning my Roses based upon "No one prunes them in the wild" theory. Its not striclty true as the weather and animals will "prune" them. Bearing in mind that animals and the elements don't have the correct tools or instructions! There is very little that you or I can do to permanently damage the plant, all we are doing is keeping it within "our" boundaries. So be fearless it will recover. Be assertive just tell it (by pruning)how and where you want it to grow. It will take no notice of you and do its own thing.
I'm waffling again, time for medication!

It had to have the chop Fozzie it had main branches hanging over or sticking out that were a good 5ft plus long with no support, looking at that photo again I think that was 2005, so imagine another years growth on it. I think it would have out done itself if not done this year Anyway garden waffle is good waffle, you keep waffling ;D
