I had one of these in my last house and it didnt grow very quickly and have to say not too keen on them At girlfriends house on Friday and she has bought a small one, cant remember name, about 1 foot tall She is getting her OH to cut down a beautiful old fir tree and plant the Magnolia in place of it - she thinks it will forge ahead and become quite well established quite quickly I have a feeling (hopefully cos I dont like the idea of chopping down this tree ) that no Magnolia is fast growing If this is the case then the tree lives jenny

You are correct Jenny.....magnolias are fairly slow growing.
Of the two main types that i'm familliar with M. Sanguinea is the tall one with the big showy blooms in early summer. These grow into biggish shrubs....small trees (15 odd feet tall) whereas the smaller M. stellata will produce smaller but more little star shaped flowers.....this shrub should grow to 10 feet ish.
Both the trees mentioned would probably take a good 20 years to reach their ideal heights provided conditions were to their liking.

Thanks Andy I passed this onto GF - she was a bit disappointed
I think she should have bought a more established shrub and not this little twig from the supermarket - which was only £7.50
OK for someone who wants to wait 20 years ;D

Like Mr Grinch I'd have the magnolia over the conifer any day, but as the magnolia is slow growing they are going to have a bit of a gap if they do remove the tree, especially as the magnolia is so small at the moment. Not only that, they are replacing an evergreen with a deciduous tree - that's going to be very different visually. Magnolias can cope with shade - can't they live with both plants?

Yes Plocket I did ask that but I think GF thought it would grow really fast ;D She likes gardening but doesnt know too much about the finer points
The conifer is very attractive and a nice shape with "turrets" growing from the main trunk; and it gives some privacy too - j w x

Oh well, perhaps with your advice, and our back-up they might keep the conifer! Px
