See, I told you I would pester you! ;D When my 'Souvenir de la malmaison' arrives, I was thinking of planting it in a container. Have far too many roses, and no available border space. Do you think that this would be a terrible idea? I wasn't thinking of leaving it contained permanently, just for a year or two. Seems to be very difficult to find useful info on care of these older roses

RM, Not a problem if I can help I will. Well well, how strange, my Malmaison spent her first two years in a pot, albeit a large one some 12-15 across at the top if I remember correctly and at least that in height. To reducei the weight I used "polystyrene" on top of crocks to about halfway up. The planting mixture used was 50/50 top soil and gen purpose compost with a hand full of Blood Fish and Bone all mixed together. She was happy in the pot but I must say that since I moved her into the border she seems to be growing better. It is rumoured that Josephine grew this rose in the gardens of her country house Malmaison hence me addressing the plant in the female form.
