One of the jobs this w/e was going to be, divide and or cut down the Miscanthus, Calmagrostis and Deschampsia grasses. But just had a look at them and they are all showing strong new shoots.
I know next to nothing about the growing needs of these plants. So, should I continue with the cutting back to ground level including the new shoots, and would it still be ok to lift and divide?
All advice gratefully received.

Pretty certain that these green shoots at the base have been there all winter. I'm going to leave my miscanthus until late march just to give that bit of protection.....they also look lovely in their winter dress and give a nice bit of movement in the garden.

Thank you Andy I was in two minds, I'll follow your lead. Is that a good time for division as well?

We tend to do all our division in autumn but to tell you the truth, i'd do it at any time when the plant is dormant as long as the ground's not frosty.

I believe the usual advice is that the late flowering grasses such as Miscanthus are best divided in spring whereas the earlier flowering stipas & festucas for example are best divided in the autumn.

Foz, I just found this thread. You do not have to cut off the green shoots. I always leave them standing. They look OK and they protect the clump against late frost. Also they do grow into big flowering shoots later in the year. Then again I do not cut my Miscanthus zebrinus untill Spring. I love the way the old grass moves in the wind. Dividing I do in Spring. I'll be cutting back my Miscanthus Sinensis Gracillimus at the end of Feb.....i do it before the green shoots get too long so i don't accidentally snip them off.
