...What would happen if I don't train my 'albertine'? How does a rambling rose behave if just left to it? Just curious really

A very odd question RM so I'll give an odd answer......I guess it will ramble across the ground and garden

Well Chuckles is right - it will just ramble along but it will root itself as it goes along.
I am just training a rambler to do a quick ramble along a low fence - ramblers and climbers do not necessarily have to climb, - it is just like hanging summer flowers - they can also be used as ground cover.
RF
Just a quick update on that - albertine is a lovely rose - it would be a shame not to have somewhere where it can shown off to it's best advantage.

Rosefriend does have a point RM, it's like anything that is grown to ramble or climb they are best when they have a structure of some sort to ramble through or climb up, it will show them off better. You may also find letting a rose such as this do it's own thing so to speak may open it up for desease, they do need to have a certain amount of air flow through them and if growing along the ground with other plants this will not happen. I'm sure you can get specific roses that are grown specifically for ground cover if that is what you are looking for. Your doing a lot in your garden at the moment, it may be useful to start a thread in the Gallery and show us some photo's

I have a couple of ground coverers, thanks Chuckles. I was just curious about 'albertine' because I don't have a large wall to grow it up, only the regular six foot boundary fence. I know it can become a bit of a monster, but I fell in love with it . I guess I'll just experiment with the training ;D

I have a 'raubritter', which has amazing goblet shaped pink blooms, and a 'swany', beautiful old fashioned white flowers. They arrived bare root just before christmas, so I'm afraid I'm still waiting to see what they'll do. The camera is a canon pixus, I think. Not sure how to download pics onto the pc
