I love Hosta's and have a few at the end of the pond. I found that those orgasmic slug pellets that Monty was on about on Friday are very good, but you get through loads of them. My problem with Hosta's is that Mollie (the collie) walks on them when the leaves are still shoots and when they come through they are ripped to shreds. Stupid dog and I have also noticed that s/s dont seem to like the big one (pride and glory?) at all - I very rarely have any holes in that and its big so only get one if you have plenty of room!

Just found this thread. Yummy hostas! I gave up growing mine in the ground and moved into pots - easier to protect. Missed Monty's orgasmic pellets - I hesitate to ask but did they have a name? I'm trying pellets made from sheep's wool at the moment (lovely smell - but that might just be me ;D). The wool is meant to dry slugs and snails out and they don't like the rough texture either. They also make a nice mulch (the pellets not the slugs). Probably best in pots though. Not sure if it would work on open ground. Blod

Mine are just shooting up. I'm not sure what to expect from the slugs this season but I have my beer lined up and ready. Hopefully the slugs haven't survived the winter as well as the lily beetles seems to have done. Seems like the harsh winter we had didn't cut back their numbers. Looks like the little beasties just snuggled up under it all and waited until it melted away. They're already out in numbers attacking my lilies which are only about 3 inches/4inches or so. Last weekend I picked off and squished about a dozen of the little nasties. I hate lily beetles.

Mine seem to have shot up, and so far not much slug / snail damage showing (that will no doubt change as the season progresses!) This is the one in the photo taken early April .. And a smaller leaved one that has a blueish tinge when it matures .. Found two others growing but they are a bit lost in the spring jungle at the moment x Tig

They certainly look well and haven't been used as slug/snail food.
My GC says that a lot of slugs have been killed by the late frosts that we have had - I do hope that he is right.

Slugs really bring out the worse in us don't they? I found myself thinking oh good to the thought that they'd been killed by frost. I just popped in to report back on my wool pellets. They seem to be working as the damage to my hostas in pots has stopped. I can see why the slimy ones would not like to cross the barrier. In the rain the pellets have swollen up and formed a sort of scratchy blanket. The Hostas are thriving so there's obviously no barrier to the water getting through. Fingers crossed it stays that way. P.S. The Bowden's catalogue has just arrived - thanks to whoever suggested them. This may do serious damage to the garden budget (don't tell the Finance Director!)

This is my Pride and Glory just emerging from the depths. S & S dont seem to like it as it never has much damage. That may be because its in a sea of pebbles or planted with Ferns? Domt know but they dont like it and I do ! These are the Hostas round the end of the pond - S & S do like these ones
