I have had my large pergola for about two years now and as it has four posts need to find fast growing climbers that will cover it On three of the posts I have a Pamela Jackman clem, a climbing rose with a clem and a Golden Showers climbing rose Pamela Jackman is winning  This leave just one post bare - I thought of a Vine but not the Russian one  Anyone any ideas and experience - I have clay soil Many thankX jenny |

If you go for a really fast climber it may swamp your arch.
How about another clem. Many do very well in pots, I'm sure Plocket will have some ideas.

Is it in a sunny spot Jennywrenn? If so you could try a winter flowering clematis like cirrhosa Freckles.  |

Hi Jenny ... what about a hardy passionflower, e.g. p. caerula? They are really easy to grow even from seed (I did it, which provides their easiness ;D), romp away happily but are amenable to pruning, and the flowers are gorgeous ... cheers ...

For very fast growing....try polygonum or virginia creeper. Even a wisteria can cover something in only a couple of years
Next, try clematis montana rubra or any of the honeysuckles. Campsis is fast but not terribly hardy. Passiflora is also a quick grower. A grape vine would cover it in a short space of time or a really nice plant to grow is the ornamental kiwi (actinidia kolomikta)
My favourite is not particularly quick but worth a mention....Trachelospermum jasminoides. Lovely clusters of white, devinely scented flowers all summer

Oh thank u everyone for your suggestions I actually want it to swamp my pergola ROXANN as I will use it to hide from my neighbours - think will post a photo of it 2moro I have one of those Jasmine's RITA already on one of my fences and it does grow very quickly My Freckles died on me last year PLOCKET  dont think it likes my soil  - I am going to buy a couple of clems (or maybe more ;D) to grow up a fence and against a wall Wanted a vine as the leaves are quite large and can give me some privacy, and, not got one of these in my garden Will keep you posted = jenny xx |

Both these look like what I am looking for Roxann but what about my clay soil it mentions each should be in light well drained soil - mine is wet and lumpy I did try to grow a potato vine - Solanum - see lovely photo - but it died within a short time - the ground is so waterlogged  Maybe a vine not a good idea then - anyone know of a climbing Iris |

That potato vine is beautiful. Sounds like you will need to improve your soil or go for a very large pot. Pots can be sunk half way into the soil which might help with the drainage even on clay soil. Some of the climbers can reach 20/30m so perhaps a large pot would curtail their growth and give good cover over your arch.

What a shame your Solanum died JW, they are lovely and would have been ideal to use. I have some cuttings going from a friends white one which I hope to plant out soon |

I know I feel sad just looking at the photo - it is long gone now tho My GF has one that has grown into a huge shrub/tree and totally covered in flowers when it is in bloom that is why I bought mine |

One of the posts could have Humulus lupulus 'Aureus', the golden hop will cover the post and romp across the top every year! Great plant, I have one at the SE corner of my pergola and it shades it beautifully. I have clematis mesh over the top of the pergola nad I tie-in the stems of the Hop as they grow.

NOOOO! Not Golden Hop..........it's a MONSTER I planted one on the front of my barn years ago, I've dug the root ball out time after time, left it under concrete slabs, and still it comes back - miles of it....every year........and it's growing in a 2' deep border on top of solid chalk and its roots are in the extreme dry - I dread to think how it would perform in good soil - poor Jenny's entire house would be swallowed in a season........ (sorry tc.. ) |

Oh dear as soon as I saw tc's suggestion I googled it and wow it says heavy clay soil so made a note to buy one IMMEDIATELY and then saw the post from 4PG And Chuckles I could take a cutting but then where do I put it - I have spend £100's on plants that are not suitable for my soil only to loose them Last year as far as I can remember lost two Smoke Bushes, two shrub rose bushes and a few half dozen more |

It is very easy to control and covers about half of my 16ft x 8ft pergola each summer. I do not hesitate to recommend it for clay soils and covering a pergola. TC |

The pergola is quite big so needs a big plant to cover it
