I planted my rose 'ice cream' the weekend before last in a bit of my garden which is now sodden. Will it cope with this amount of rain or should I rescue it for higher ground?

Hi, Rosemother,
It all depends how long it in standing water for ! If its in it for days then that not good. If its only in it for a couple of hours then it should cope. Did you improve drainage before planting ??

Did my best, Mr. G, but I garden on heavy clay and the ground is soooo wet at the moment. It was just beginning to throw out new shoots when I planted it, and I haven't been down into the bog for a couple of days because it hasn't stopped raining. Ground is absolutely saturated. Quite worried about it

Mines the same ! I planted 5 new bushes on the wetter side of my garden 3 weeks ago and the whole of my garden is virtually under water. Roses are generally tough things, so just so long as its not in standing water for days it should be ok. Wet soggy ground in the borders doesn't necessarily mean thats its water logged !!

Well without seeing the mess, I would say that you would both do more harm that good by taking them out.
Leave them where they are. Hopefully it will stop raining at some point.
It is always difficult to know what to do best actually. Keep an eye on them certainly - can you both swim?
RF
PS - You are very right about one thing Mr. Grinch and that is that Roses are a lot tougher than they sometimes look.

Most of Mine are in a damp bed of heavy clay not lost one yet. Damp in Lancashire means very wet! Its been raining here for days. Had a look at lunch time and they are all still showing signs of growth.
