I'm after a rose for my dad as he's rather keen on them and it's his birthday next week. He likes white or yellow roses in particular, and a good scent. The spot he ideally wants one for is next to the front door where they have an open sided rustic porch - the tiled roof is supported by four wooden pillars which are joined with x shaped cross bars - I hope this makes sense! Dad bought himself a lovely rose a year or so ago from David Austin but it is rampant and growing all over the place. He intends to move this rose to a more suitable spot, and would prefer something that is more manageable but that will reach the top of the porch roof, and possibly grow over it slightly. The difficult bit is that the porch only gets morning sun. Please please PLEASE can someone recommend a rose, preferably from David Austin (from stock - I don't want to have to order it) because I can get there easily. If it's any good I can also easily get to COTTAGE GARDEN ROSES Thank you very much! Px

P. hHave a look at Stanwell perpetual its a white come blush will flower all summer and has a good scent thr height is 5 foot width about same but can be pruned to desired size, you know me and pruning, just cut the bl??dy thing till it fits. No seriously just trim to fit. If Dad plants it closer to the house rather than middle of porch then it will spread and look more natural
Fx
PS you dont have to get it from DA any good supplier.

Oooh thank you so much Fozzie! You're an angel Stanwell looks lovely but I think he had something just a little bit taller in mind, so that it at least reached the top of the porch roof without taking over. I might get it for him anyway though, perhaps for the other side ;D Whilst looking up Stanwell I did spot Agnes and Highfield - I wonder if you could comment on their suitability too? Highfield in particular because the name means something to us as a family. Thank you!

P. Are you sitting down?I think they are both good choices, but if it was me I would go for Highfield !! As much as I like Agnes, bless her, she is a shrub and will be quite bushy. Maybe not ideal for Dads porch. Now Highfield is a climber, therefore more suitable and easier to "contain". The flowers look "softer" being only a semi double. You can push your lower jaw back up now! There are some I like, normally singles and semi doubles that open fully like Highfield. Anyway it came into being via insect pollination rather than intervention of man. You didn't think you would get away with no Techie stuff!

Morning Fozzie and I'm thrilled that you approve of Highfield and will try and get hold of one for dad. And I'm always so impressed by your techie stuff Fozzie, as you know ;D I like that it's naturally developed too and if I do get Highfield I will pass that information on to dad. I'll keep you posted, but hope to go shopping on Sunday! Px

Hi Plocket,
Not an old rose i know but 'Golden Showers' is a good one. Rigorous climber with an upright strong habit. Relatively thorn less, with good scent. Tolerates a lot of conditions including a bit of shade !!

Ooh I saw that on the David Austin site - thanks Mr G I'll do and have another look at it. I should warn you though that Highfield is still my fave because of the name. Px

I've phoned around and can't find a Highfield locally but have decided to head up to C&K Jones tomorrow with any luck. They've got Golden Showers and Chris in stock so I'm going to have a look and decide. They've also got another rose I'm after so we'll get that at the same time.
Thank you for all your help everyone and I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow.

Hia! For those interested we returned home with Chris (for dad), Hanky Panky for me, and another that I'm not going to name for personal reasons (no it's not called Plocket!). We got soaked planting them about half an hour ago but they are happier in the ground than not because they are bare rooted. Thank you all for your suggestions!
