My Souvenir de la Malmaison has a bud!! It barely has any leaves, but a tiny bud has formed. Should I remove it, oh wise one?

She will need pruning about now. If you have to prune the bud then so be it! More will come to replace it. Feed with Blood,Fish Bone just after pruning. Is this her first year in your garden?

Only arrived bare root a fortnight ago, Fozzie! That's why I'm so surprised by the bud. I thought that it's main concern would be putting down roots and settling in!

OK RM. I thought I remembered you talking about buying her. If you have not planted her yet, I would not leave it much later than March. I assume there are 3 or 4 main stems. At time of planting I normally reduce these down to approx 6 inches, as you say to give the roots a fighting chances to establish. If you have already planted her then cut them back now to 6 inches. If the bud goes as part of that, then worry not! Remember to feed. You'll get flowers later, perhaps not a great show this tear but next will be a lot better.
