Hi all, I'm planning to grow a pieris and a mini rhodendron in my front raised bed, and will be mixing in ericaceous compost and leafmould with the topsoil which is going into the bed. However, I'd also like to grow a couple of small hebes, and will be planting Crocosmia for summer colour, as well as spring bulbs in the autumn. How do I make sure that the soil is acid enough for the ericaceous plants, but not too acid for the others? Or do I just have to grow one or the other. I know this is probably pretty obvious to some of you, but not to me ... cheers ...

Not sure myself, canary, but will be interested in the answer because I've wondered about this too

Personally I'd grow the ericaceous plants in pots CC, that way you can ensure that the feed stays in their soil, and you can sink the pots into the soil if you don't want to see them. Look out for smaller varieties of peris and rhodo and you should be fine.

I don't actually have the problem because my soil is ericaceous anyway! It's stuff that DON'T like ericaceous soil that I have to grow in pots! But I have improved some areas of the garden so I have actually got quite a lot of choice regarding plants, so long as they can cope with some shade!!!

Hi Plocket ... sorry, I was rather unclear . The raised bed is built on concrete (with drainage holes in the concrete), so is basically a giant pot ... my query was whether the other plants I mentioned would tolerate an ericaceous environment ... cheers ...

I think hebes and crocosmia will probably be ok CC - I've got them in my garden they've been there for a few years now!!!

If I put a Pieris in a pot and sink it in the garden will I need to top up the ericaceous compost reguarly, or will it be fine just left?
