Hello, I bought a couple of little variagated ivy plants on the way home from school yesterday, with a view to planting the 'fedge' against the chicken wire/ fence in the front garden [It's Spruances fault for this impulsive purchase ;D ] My only concern is whether they are going to be difficult to keep from taking over the adjacent flower beds. I don't want to be forever pulling shoots out from among the shrubs and perennials. Should I sink pots in the ground, or will they want to go up rather than out?

Hi Jonah ... I assume you mean the ivies that are normally grown as house plants. I had one of these in a small courtyard in my last house - it is a very slow grower. After seven years it had only gone half-way up the wall (very pretty, mind you). However, what about one of the large-leaved variegated ivies (dark green in the middle of the leaf, light around it) - don't know the proper name. These scramble up very quickly, and do tend to go 'up' rather than 'out' ... cheers ...

Hi Canarycreeper, You are probably right about the houseplant thingy, they weren't labelled, they were in a section at the ironmongers with basket plants. They have small cream edged leaves. I'd rather they weren't too rampant actually, I only want them to reach about 2-3 feet and was thinking of planting other climbers/ramblers with them, so I might give them a try. You've helped put my mind at rest they they won't take over, thank you.

If you look at this picture you will see where next doors Ivies have grown through and over my fence, yes there is a fence under all that ;D there are 3 different Ivies and I don't mind them growing as it gives all year greenery and that area of my gdn does not grow well at all. On the other side of the fence is a fairly steap drop and probably a 4ft difference in ground level.

Oh dear, your pic has got me a bit worried Chuckles. ;D Have they been there long? Are they all the little varagated ones, or is there a rampant traditional ivy in there? It does look nice, but seeing as mine would be planted along my main summer flower bed. Please tell me it has taken 20 years to get like that....... ;D

They are garden ivy jonah rather than the house plant ivy and have taken over the fence in the last 5-6 years, the bank on the other side is covered quite thickly, so what I have is what has grown up hill. I do have to trim then up yearly to keep them in check or they would take over
