Hi I have returned from my tour of South America ( and am absolutely knackered!). I have noticed 2 things - a) part of the garden is under several cms of water!!! b)the dogwoods I planted in January are coming into leaf - should I cut them back now,or should I leave them this year as they are newly planted? Good to be back

I've pruned all my winter bark colour this week at work. Personally, i'd cut all last seasons growth back to about 2-3 buds....pretty hard. They will really benifit from hard pruning and you'll be amaized where they sprout from once cut back.
Welcome back

Oh crumbs I'd forgotten about my dogwoods! I'd better get out there tomorrow and prune them - thanks for the reminder!!!
Don't forget to take cuttings from the bits that you prune off if you want more plants - they take easily.

You want Cornus alba Sibirica, it's called the red barked dogwood!

Or the variety "winter sun" Alternatively, C. alba 'elegentissima' has good red stems and gorgeous variegated leaves in summer....well worth trying OM Why not go for a small group of winter colour White rubus cockburnianus green cornus stolonifera 'flavaramea' bright orange salix alba chermesina and red cornus alba elegentissima
