Hello all, I want to do something with a bit of the garden which is viewed from the sitting room window. It's approx. 5mx3m and is grassed at the moment, north facing with a 5ft stone wall behind it and a lime tree at one side. I am thinking of a bed of heathers, anybody got any ideas please.

First thing that springs to mind is a wild flower meadow. I saw a seed collection in the GC today which was for lawns - the wild flower seed has some lawn seed mixed in.

If you go for a bed of heathers....interplant them with conifers of various shapes, sizes and colours.
Very 1980's but works a treat

Thank you mrs beige and andy, we have a meadow in the back field which is quite hard work with all the cutting and raking up at the right times!. I quite like the idea of conifers but the OH says "no", still I'm the gardener and he is only the money man ;D
I am trying not to do anything without the proper planning but if it's fine tomorrow----------

Hi dirtyboots. When you say north facing I presume it is quite shady? If so, I start thinking of ferns, hostas, heucheras, lots of lovely foliage plants, solomans seal, dicentra etc with woodland perennials and bulbs dottied among them. I actually think I'm more of a shade than sun plant person. Mind you, if your weather has been as fine as it has here the last couple of days, you've probably done your garden anyway! ;D
