Hi all,
the growing tips of one of my roses is covered in greenfly, even though it seems a tad early in the year for this - what is the best organic way of getting rid of them? For the moment I'm just going to wipe them off with a paper towel, but I don't know that that is a long -term solution ... cheers ...

Is washing up liquid organic?

I would use a squirt of fairy liquid in a sprayer first of all CC. There are also plenty of "natural" remedies around in garden centres based on fatty acids and they're worth a go too.

Same here Chuckles............all the washing up liquid does it to wash them off the plant and, if the soil is moist, they'll just clamber on and start all over again ....albeit somewhat shinier ;D S x

I use the same combo attack as Andy, there are also sprays based on soft soaps. Any of the Onion family are a good companion plant against aphids (they don't like the smell!), as long as you can stop the slugs eating them.

Spray with garlic water.....just infuse a garlic clove in a squirty bottle or better still plant garlic near your roses and it keeps them away.
I noticed greenfly in March....was totally surprised by them.

Thanks to all of you ... I've tried the washing-up solution both with garlic and without, but the greenfly seem to keep coming back, and I can already see the effect - sort of wilting - on the growing tips. Also, I've noticed a plague of greenfly on other rose bushes in the area - could it be the weather? Hopefully they'll recover ... cheers ...

Well, the garlic and washing up liquid seems to have banished them from the roses for the moment, but this afternoon I found them on a patch of tulips - what is this, an invasion ... cheers ...

I've seen a lot of ladybirds in my garden just recently and I wonder if it cos I left out a lot of canes with holes in them - where they may set up "home" Noticed green fly on my Golden Showers a few days ago and gone today

I checked mine again after reading this thread....interesting thing is the ones with lavenders planted under them are greenflyless the ones with no lavenders have greenfly....starting the spraying a lot earlier this year.
Got more lavender today so will plant some nearby.
