It looks very much like a Stinking Iris (Iris foetidissima) to me Chuckles.
It has orange-red berries in the winter and if you don't cut off the seed pods you will have new plants shooting up everywhere for years afterwards.
Oh, and if you crush the leaves it is supposed to smell like roast beef.
It seems very tolerant of even the poorest soils and deep shade, and is one of the few plants that seems to thrive under the canopy of my prunus pissardii.

That's the one....i've seen them but couldn't think what it was called or if it was actually an iris. They have big seed pods which split open to show bright orange/red berries/fruit

Spot on you pair it does smell of Roast Beef made me hungry ;D. Have just Googled it and I'm sure I've never bought one, it was in the bed that is now veg and I dug loads of stuff up and put into pots. It was a rather full overgrown border so I have never seen it flower. Guess it came from birds dropping seeds. Nice birdies Now I know what it is I have just the place for it, a very dry semi shady area were I put pots of Hostas and Ferns, will had a bit of colour. Wonder what colour it is Thanks guys

The flowers are a pale yellow colour but nothing to write home about. The main attraction IMHO is the seed pods and evergreen foliage.
They germinate very easily from seed, and so a bird 'gift' seems most likely if you don't have them already.

Just the evergreen will do nicely in the area I'm going to plant it, it's very dry and nothing much grows there other than Ivy leaf structure will look good too, thanks for your help and thanks to the birds too ;D

Well look what I spotted whilst watering tonight, the plant that Andy and Spru ID's for me in April 2007......it's eventually flowered ;D I didn't plant it until February this year so the poor thing was stuck in a pot for ages and ages. I like it and am really pleased to at last see what it looks like. Not sure if it lives up to it's name because I coudn't get to it to smell it
