Firstly you need to eradicate the pest that's causing it whether it's sacle insect, mealy bug or aphids.
For the actual sooty mould, i would get a damp cloth with a dash of fairy liquid on and that should remove it.

Andy, thanks, problem is I don't know what pest is causing this. Although we've currently got a greenfly infestation (rose - tulips - honeysuckle) I can't see anything on the Fatsia - the only sign that something is wrong is the mould ... cheers ...
