Well, looks like I'm going to have to invest in a heated propagator, I haven't had time to do a search on the interweb yet so thought I'd be extremely lazy and ask you guys first for recommendations Anyone have any recommendations? I know Sweetleaf suggested one where you can vary the temp (I think thats what you said ) Depending on how big I may need 2.....

TJ, rather like greenhouses, get the best you can afford. If you need 2, perhaps one that you can vary the temperature and one that just provides a fixed level of warmth (which is what I have).

Mine are both like Micks` a standard temp for all, but if I was buying one now, Id buy one with variable temperature control, as you noticed from reading your seed packs some plants need a higher temp than others to germinate....natives rarely need such pampering. Theres a sale on in Homebase atm I`d have a look in there, ;D and then compare with online prices.

You might (or might not) be interested to know that there is a cactus, Echinocactus horizonthalonious, where a temperature of 115f is recommended to get them to germinate!

Well, I haven't got one but then I have a whole bathroom (drawing board on the bath for 2months) since middle daughter went to uni so I don't really need one.........BUT I think they would be handy for temperamental seeds which need cosseting. My only concern would be: where do you put the seedlings when they need moving if you haven't got warm window sills without hurting the babies because of drops in temperatures? I am a follower of the 'treat 'em mean' school of seed sowing as I think it makes them sturdier later on....just another view. Not that I'm jealous about not having one or anything....

I think they're sposed to be good for awkward seeds that need cossetting (don't we all?)...'a bit of bottom heat' to encourage the roots... My OH is so enthused at the mo I may be able to sneak one into the house without him getting upset...Carol's prog may be a tad 'bitty' but it's fired up my OH to get gardening...we were in Wilkinsons yesterday and he was v taken with a plastic clotchy-thing..he thinks that he might need one to protect his crops...bless... ;D

I have seen this on my trawl through the sites, I don't think the temp is variable though. I sent my OH out to all garden centers today looking for GH staging and variable heated props and he's found staging for 20 quid and a variable heated prop for r59.99 - seems to be the cheapest so far. I checked Homebase on my way home last night but they didn;t have any heated ones let alone variable

I am waiting for this month's GW magazine. I believe they are going to do a review of heated propagators January's Garden Answers have a review too, but doesn't give too much away. It basically states that you should buy the biggest you can afford, preferably with a variable thermostat that can vary temp from 0 to 40 degrees C and have a good strong clear lid with easy to open vents. It then reviews some unheated ones, heated ones and some top of the range ones. Like the Vitopod one that you can use at different heights, as it has two layers for a lid. Yes please, but at £179.95, I have to say no. I have a Sankey heated one, but have thought this year on getting one with a variable thermostat. Maybe a Sankey one again. I quite like the Jumbo propogatot from www.organcatalogue.com which looks a bit like a cloche with a heating mat. Like the idea it packs away neatly when not in use. Anyone tried one of these. Not sure I have the space though, so need to check. Why can't you get a window one with a thermostat? Hope this helps Keith

well, GW magazine arrived today and I was straight to the review section on the propagators. I am decided now on the Sankey Glowarm heated (but not variable) at 29.99 from my local GC, it comes with lots of extras but I'm also going to purchase a soil thermometer. Then I shall start getting some of those toms sowed

Argos still got no stock on the 3 tray one Is yours this one Sankey Growarm 300 I'm wondering about spending just that bit more and going for this one Sankey Plantmaster 2000 Hi, yes thats the one BB, I also saw the one you are going after in my local GC, its the cheapest variable one I have seen so far btw but what I didn't like was the fact that the dial doesn't tell you what the heat setting is so you would still need a soil thermometer, I don't know enough about them but I would guess they are all like that. I've decided I'm not an experienced enough gardener yet to fork out for the variable one Any advice folks
