how the hell did i manage to reply within the quote Thanks TJ really useful to know about the dial, bit daft if you ask me. When you quote and take stuff out you need to watch your not taking some of the bit's out that make it a quote and also that you type your reply after the
if you see what I mean. You must have typed inside the last
....does my head in sometimes ;D

Has anyone already got a variable heat one & found it useful? I find the ordinary ones can be warmed up by where they are, near a radiator or in the sun they really get hot which is usually not too good.

I still haven't got a Propagator sorted Argos don't list them now they have a new catalogue out I went to the big Downtown GC at Grantham yesterday and they only had one and it was £70 and looked a bit cheap for the price they were asking. Has anyone got any suggestions pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease On line I'm looking at either Sankey Growarm 300 Sankey Plantmaster 2000 Super 7

Thanks SL I do like that one because of the little trays I like that idea. If Argos had had stock then I would have had that one by now. However, since i have dawdled about in getting one it has given me some thinking time. I like to do cuttings and my success rate would be much improved with a prop, so I shouldn't have to do loads to get a few, if you get my drift. As I'm doing veg seeds for the first time as well my theory is get something that will be useful for everything. Do you get the method in my madness of spending that bit more

Of course! I have been looking at my seed packs though and remembering last year, I reckon the one with spare trays is excellent as one moves out, another moves in, and they can stay in their lidded trays till they are grown up enought to cope with the outside world (my babies I love the cute little trays which will move to any windowsill, no trouble. My two big propagators require a bench and more often than not live in the kitchen in the growing season.

Sorry if I'm being a pain ;D I think you've just nailed it SL, how about if I bought the Big Prop and also some those spare trays I could have the lids too for when stuff is taken out of the big Prop. Or I could just use the small rigid trays I've bought from wilco's and the flimsy lids. Am I making sense

Sounds good to me chuckles! ;D Of course lots of little prop trays with lids would solve the problem, and you could have variable temps for different seeds as well. Go for it.

Thanks SL youv'e been a great help , thats what I love about GWD you can always get help. Right I'm going to order the Prop now, and use smaller trays when needed. It will enable me to have the best of both worlds with a good big Prop like that. And I only have to buy the Prop and bits once. No use compromising and then regretting it I guess. Thanks again

Off the top of my head about 9 or 10. Kalanchoe manginii already has aerial roots so you can pot it up straight away. The Aloe and the Echinocereus are already rooted.

Hmmm...
I'm afraid I'll be a big disappointment to you.
On the rare occasion I sow seeds these days I use an open poypropylene seed tray in the greenhouse (or 3" pots).
But these days (since giving up my allotments and having to look after Hitler) I no longer grow veg or annuals (except tomatoes).
So, by and large my propogator is my garden, and my technique is hardwood cuttings.
I used to chit parsnip seeds on wet kitchen towels in a plastic bag on the window ledge. Xfer to small pots once chitted, then to 3' long x 6" wide polypropylenene tubes full of finely sieved soil and initially covered with a plastic bag to grow exhibition parsnips.
But as you can probably guess my garden is a bit of a disappointment at the moment. I am going to make more of an effort this year though. But still not bother with annuals.

Wrestling this thread away from Mick and his mischievous ways, and returning it to topic:
This months (Februarys) issue of GW, as well as having the best Star Letter every seen in a top class glossy mag, also has a review of half a dozen heated propagators.
Might be worth a butchers for either

I have electric prop without a thermostat. I don't use it much these days but a layer of coarse sand on the bottom will transfer the heat evenly, and switching it off first thing in the morning and on last thing at night will keep it from overheating.
