has anyone ever made a DIY heated propagator. I was thinking about it at work today and how easy it could be by using undersoil heating cables or heating pads that can be bought from reptile supplies. Take one of the large "Stewart" trays and place one of these www.rocketreptile.co.uk/index.php?cPath=2_19 or one of these www.rocketreptile.co.uk/index.php?cPath=2_19 which can be controlled by one of these www.rocketreptile.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=2_20&products_id=4Place sand over the heating device and then construct some kind of polythene "tent" that fits over the tray. Place seeds or cuttings in pots and put the pots on the sand. You could even convert a section of the greenhouse over to one of these or even a whole coldframe which can remain on all year round.

You would still need to buy a miniature greenhouse would you not? How much cheaper would it be from getting the real mcoy? Being for a reptilian home can they stand a lot of moisture as you get in a miniGH ? Otherwise it sounds like fun to do. Go for it. Dutchy

Yes!
I experimented with a DIY propagator, black gravel tray which would take two standard seed trays, layer of sand about an inch thick and a cover. Place on a slatted shelf high enough to get a hurricane lamp under and there's your heated propagator. Place it in a temporary plastic covered greenhouse to shield it from wind, or normal greenhouse if you have one.

Home brewers can use heated cable as well........ it is waterproof (Ive seen it wrapped around demijohns) I was thinking about something similar, but bear in mind with electricity and water its best not to do it yourself. Electrocution is obviously on the cards.

Hi Andy,
I made a heated propagator many years ago from plans in a Readers Digest gardening book. There is a parts and cutting list and the instructions are easy to follow. The size is approximately 1050 X 600 but this can be enlarged or decreased accordingly.
I still have these plans and if you are interested I will forward a copy of them to you.
The cost of making it is negligible however to install it with an under soil heat cable and variable thermostat can add to the cost.
Regards
Drew
