Hi all, Fatsias are supposed to be easy to grow from cuttings but I've tried three times - nothing . I've used new leaves and rooting hormone Any tips? I really don't fancy shelling out for one if I can do it myself <stingy smiley> ... cheers ...

Okays. With fatsia, the essential thing is to stop water loss in the cutting. Two ways you're going to do this....1) place the cutting in a plastic bag sealing in the moisture and humidity and 2) cut the remaining leaf in half so there's less leaf area to lose water from. With fatsia, i usually cut a slither of stem away at the bottom....about 1cm long and 1mm deep. This exposes more of the cambium (the group of cells that produce roots). Dust it with hormone powder. As you can see, there's two ways of taking the cutting....a tip cutting or a nodal leaf bud cutting where you literally have a leaf at the top and a node at the bottom....no growing point except the dormant bud in the leaf axis. Here's a pic

Andy, thanks, brilliantly clear ;D - I think where I went wrong was not cutting the sliver to expose the cambium - never heard of this before, but it makes perfect sense ... will report on progress in a few weeks ... cheers ...

Andy--A brilliant illustration--I also 'pot' about three together- then if one fails I have the other two. I have found them relatively easy and have given loads away to friends/family and neighbours. When you see the price of them in GC's it makes one wonder why.

I agree that they seem to be relativey easy and can't believe the price in GCs. The biggest 'rip off' tho, I think is Lavatera and buddleia they seem to grow like weeds, but the price never reflects that!

I left a beautiful mature one in my last garden--I should have taken some cuttings then. before my move-- Wish I knew someone who has one now so I could 'beg' a couple of cuttings!! All the rooted cuttings I have given away to neighbours and I am not in touch with them now!! My son has just returned a Cutting that had rooted for him, (Bless him) so hope this grows soon so I can increase my stock of Fatsia.
