Hi all ... just checked the greenhouse and my autumn-sown seeds have either died (Echinacea) or not germinated at all (Aconitum) . Also, except for fuchsias which I always find v. easy, my autumn cuttings of Pelargonium and Penstemon are dead or dying ... I had similar problems last year. What experience have others had with autumn vs. spring sowings/cuttings??? ... cheers ...

Strange. Cuttings from palargoniums will always be slower in autumn but tend to be hardier and more survive. We always used to do ours in September and always dipped them in a fungicide. We used clay pots, JI cuttings soil and kept the cuttings in a greenhouse at around 10-15 C. They were kept dry and sprayed monthly with a fungicide (systemic) and all dead and dying leaf litter was removed daily. Good ventilation is essential too even with the heating on.
What are yours dying from....blackleg ?

Andy, I have no idea why they're dying, but it doesn't look like any sort of fungus However, since I never sprayed with a fungicide it might be ... cheers ...

I decided to do some Pelargonium cuttings this year - the first time for about 5 years. I took 18 as I always lose so many and I have only lost one this year and none from the 6 hanging Pelargonium cuttings that I took.
The Begonia cuttings that I desperately wanted are all dying - I have no idea why. I put them all in Perlite and it worked like a dream - as soon as put them into soil the trouble started. I thought I was watering them too much but the soil seems dry enough.
The only possible thing is that I took the cuttings too late - here we take them around the middle of August and I took them just before throwing them away - basically as an after thought!!
