Has anyone grown Carrots in tubs? I'm thinking of doing it next year as I have a few big blue ones hanging around. I heard that carrot fly dont go higher than 20 inches so I will cut the tubs to 25 inches if this is so. Also can anyone recommend one for tub growing. Thanks for any help.

I have consistently failed with carrots, no matter where I grow them
I would think a stump rooted variety such as Parmex would be fine in containers

Any variety would be fine as your tubs sound as if they are quite deep, don`t fill right to the top with compost leave about 6 inches clear then there is no chance of carrot fly getting in. it`s true they are very low fliers. You could also plant a few marigolds in the ground at the bottom of your tub as an extra precaution. carrot fly hate the smell of marigolds. I saw some carrots in tubs at the compost stand at the Chelsea Flower Show this year. hope this helps

SORRY I MEANT TO SAY DON`T CUT THEM DOWN IN SIZE I KNOW YOU WILL USE MORE COMPOST IN THEM BUT THE HIGHER THE BETTER. YOU WILL GET LONG STRAIGHT CARROTS AS WELL. ]

Hi CA I have grown carrots in containers before. A bit hit and miss, but some success nonetheless. You could try these - they are from the Thompson & Morgan patio veg, which are suitable for containers: seeds.thompson-morgan.com/uk/en/product/218/1

We've grown "Minifinger" for the last couple of years, in plant pots, with reasonable success. And if you want to avoid the dreaded carrot-fly then raise the pots up above 18 inches (I think that's the right height). We just stood our pots on upended empty pots which did the trick.
