It was just starting to recover from the mould, and grow new leaves, and now those new leaves are beginning to drop. There are teeny webs between the branches, but I can't see any beasties. Heeeelp!

Probably red spider mite. If you look on the underside of the leaves or in the webs, you will see tiny brown/red "dots" which are the beasties.
They thrive in hot, dry conditions and hate moist, humid air. So initially, give the plant a spray with tepid water...especially on the underside of the leaves. A systemic insecticide can then be used if desired but a daily spray is usually enough to keep them at bay.

If andy is right and it is red spider mite which is difficult to get rid off, make sure you move the plant away from others that you may have. They do enjoy hopping onto other plants as I found to my cost many moons ago.

Will they kill my plants?

They will spread and eventually kill your plants but im my experience, they're one of the easiest bugs to kill and keep away provided you spray your plants almost daily with tepid water (rain water or soft water is best as it doesn't leave limescale on the leaves)

Again - I don't know what is on the market for red spider mite in the UK these days but Yes plants do not take kindly to being infested with them. I would get something and move your others plants a safe distance away.
Years ago I lost 6 plants within a short space of time.

If you still have RSM, get a general purpose systemic bug gun from any GC.
However, in my experience, this is pretty standard with most indoor bonsai...they are just swines to keep no matter how much TLC you throw at them

I have to confess to having discovered a sadistic streak. I've quite enjoyed squishing the little critters and imagining their puny cries for mercy...'no, please don't squish me!' etc. May need professional help

Some people (including me) are allergic to RSM.....when i used to work for Rentokil Tropical Plants, i helped maintain some pretty large and impressive tropical landscapes in offices and atriums.
Sometimes the RSM got so bad that the webs used to get around my face if i was pruning or something....and it bought me out in a horrible burning rash/
Good luck RM

RM - thanks to Andys advice on spraying with tepid water I am managing to control the RSM that attacked my chilli and basil on my windowsill. No visible cobwebs and I am still spraying them daily, I have found the odd one crawling on the pots and squish them - not sure how long it will take to get rid of them totally though! Tig
