I have just bought a paket of 5 Pineapple Lilliy Bulbs. There are no Planting/Cultivation instructions on the packet. I wondered if anyone had grown these and are they known by another name. They were an impulsive 'buy' so hope I haven't wasted my money on them because I do not have a Greenhouse if they need heat to start them off. Thanks for any help given.--Bigs

I have grown them for years Bigs - they are aka eucomis bicolour Easy to grow in pots, they seem to like quite free-draining soil, but also need to be watered in prolonged dry periods. Survive the frosts and even the seeds grow (although they take ages to mature and flower, I have had some seed grown plants for four years and still no sign of flowers) The bulbs flower fine Tig

Just one word of warning. Mine tend to rot if left out in the garden over winter. They don't like to be wet when they're dormant so if you can store them in pots in a cold but dry place they should be OK.

Hi Biggles - I grew them for years as well and they always made a good Container Plant. I just popped it in the cellar for the winter and it was great the following year.
One thing I do remember though and I don't know whether any of you have noticed but one year I put it in the, then existent GH, for about a month and the smell was horrible in there - it stank!!

Oooooh RF that don't sound nice, are you sure it was the Lillies ;D I've got 2 pots of them, love um. Fab leaves and stems, lovely flowers and also look lovely when they go to seed too, who could ask for more from a plant. I store mine inside over winter, if I recall beware to dreaded VW like them Good luck with them Bigs

I have planted them in a container and left them outside in a sheltered spot (sun after mid-day). Hopefully by the time they show their shoots the frosts will have almost gone! I have never grown these before or even heard of them so I will be looking forward to something 'new' to grow. Thanks once again--Bigs

Dutchy- Do you think I had better 'lift them out' again and wait till later on. I have only just put them in the container (yesterday) so it would not be a problem. Wow! I like the photograph of your Lillies- they look much nicer than the ones on the Packet that they came in. Plocket-- So pleased I reminded you of yours--they might have got forgotten and that would have been a shame.-I hope they have not rotted with the 'wet' weather we have been having lately. I might just go back to the shop and get another 5 Bulbs cause I like the look of them--something different for me to grow. -Bigs

Bigs they are lovely plants and I think they are very easy to look after - providing you bring them in over winter! They don't need any special care over winter though - I usually just take them into the garage and forget about them until the spring, and only water them if I remember. It would be nice if they do last the winter but if they don't I will certainly get some more because they look really unusual, and I like green flowers anyway.

I am looking forward to these Pineapple Lillie's--something new for me--Any other suggestions on 'something' different that can be grown in containers? This 'small' garden has given me 'food for thought'--Container Gardening-I am feeling a bit more optimistic now, and so pleased I can get advice/recommendation etc. from my Gardening Friends on here.--Bigs

I'll have a thunk for you Biggles - I'm a bit of a container gardener myself coz I've got such a little garden and half of it is concrete! I need containers to extend my planting space. I'm always one to bung a clematis in a container btw - and that would give height to your garden as well as flowers Have you got a water garden? That's another thing to think about

The place I am thinking of is East facing --and what size pot do you recommend?

I'll start a new thread for you Biggles, but you'll have to tell me a bit more about what sort of clematis you like!

I bought some new Eucomis yesterday and planted them up - four in a pot which will go in a sheltered spot in the front garden. There seem to be so many more varieties of Eucomis available now - I also found dwarf white ones, and some pinker looking ones.

They only cost £1 packet--(3 Bulbs in each pkt) I only bought two because I had no idea what they were or even if I could grow them without 'heat'. I often go in there because every so often they do sell some unusual bulbs (and sometimes a Load of Rubbish all shriveled up etc.) but if we know what to look for then they can be a good bargain!--Bigs
