Apologies if something similar's been covered before, but I saw this in action today, and thought it brilliant:
When using normal 3"x3" (80x80mm) posts, don't set them in holes filled with concrete, set them in 2 foot lengths of plastic drainpipe, with the top of the pipe just an inch or so above ground level. Put 3 or 4 inches of concrete in the bottom of the pipe, then the post is slid in (it's a snug fit inside a 4" pipe), then gravel trickled in around the sides of the post to within 4 inches of the top of the pipe, followed by a final 4 inches of concrete.
You end up with a post-end 'jacketed' against wetness that will last significantly longer.
I'm fairly confident in saying this, as it was a timber merchant's fence going up, and he said not to tell everyone. So I'm just telling you lot.
OM.
