I have one of these in my raised bed. It is in flower at the moment and at some time soon, I would like to move it to restrict it's root space. Moving it will also require it to be pruned.
My question is, and it may sound like a very silly one, when would be a good time to move it?

Yours is already flowering ...heavens mine hasn't any buds as yet!!
Moving it - erm well I would have said autumn which is too late or after it has flowered - then you could prune it at the same time.
I do hope that others have an idea.

Mine has big, fat buds but no flowers as yet. I would either do it now, miss the flowers and get a years growth out of it in it's new space or late summer after pruning back quite a bit. Others may think otherwise.

Many thanks for the tips. Here is a picture of its flowers, which I took a couple of weeks ago.

Easiest thing to do, if you are worried about moving it and losing it, is to layr a pice. Ours roots as it goes along the bed. Mind it is still in winter mode at present rather than flowering. Pity those who want one are so far away, there must be half a dozen rooted pieces waiting to be binned.

I have had my akebia 5 years now (this is the 5th year) - has anyone has the cucumber type fruits that are supposed to grow on them? My GC says they are edible but I am not so sure that I want to try. They are called Japanese Cucumbers here. RF

I'd quite like to get one of these but then I read they can grow 10 metres high, thats over 30ft Probably a NooNoo question but can they be kept to about 5' and still give a nice showof flowers.

Sorry did not read this thread again. Tried sending them before and they do not survive the journey. Had one fruit once. It rotted!

Mine is just flowering now and the flower sprays are all along the vine where the leaves were. I don't think you would loose flowers by keeping it cut back as they woulds also be further back along the vine too. I had one around a moon hole in some trellis once and it didn't seem to mind me being forceful with it. Others may think differently though. Hope that make sense NooNoo ;D

I honestly don't think that you can upset Akebia much as far as cutting it back is concerned. The problem that I would have is that it is curled around itself to such a degree that I would probably have to prune back to around 2 meters.
It it was grown on a trellis whereby you could cut the length back - no problem at all I don't think.
