Hi all, on another board I saw a reference to Phlox as being suitable for shade, but all my books say full sun . Has anyone had experience growing it in shade? ... cheers ...

I have had some in semi-shade CC (still do)- they flower very well and the flower last longer - the only thing that is a little annoying is that that get mildew fairly early.....possibly the variety though.
I do find that the varieties that I have in the sun are slightly better and they flower earlier.
A gardener once told me that in actual fact most plants can be put anywhere - it is the gardener that has to adjust most - i.e. more water, less water etc etc.

The only thing is there's obviously specialist plants...i wouldn't dream of putting stuff like rosemary or cistus in damp shade whereas plants like hostas, astilbes and ferns appreciate shady, wet areas....although again, i've seen them grow in a normal border in full sun.

I plant Phlox anywhere. I suppose the little alpine rock-planty Phlox might like full sun, but the herbaceous one should be fine. One of my favourites. Love the smell.

I have phlox in 2 parts of my garden, one full sun and another partially shaded for some of the day and they both thrive, my daughter also has lovely ones which are in quite a shady spot CC ;D
