I'd personally put it in a pot and then put the pot in a poly bag (clear poly bag like a sandwich bag). Water the pot well and seal the poly bag up and put on a warm, bright window sill....no direct sun.
Please let us know how you get on....and did your MIL start the seed off herself (i have a lovely ripe mango at home ready to eat !!!)

Yes she did, she has taken the hard bit off, but I dont know what else she has done to it I have wrapped it in a piece of damp kitchen roll and put it in a plastic bag in the airing cupboard as described on an american site, apparently the roots appear first ( ) so I will wait and see what happens....will keep you posted...I will probably kill it tho, they seem quite hard to get going

When you say "Taken the hard bit off" do you mean the outer casing of the seed?--I managed to get one going a fews years ago (without taking the outer shell off) by piercing it with an orange stick (at the thin end at the top) and laying this across a glass of water so the bottom part (Thick end) of the mango just touched the water. I got it to the stage of 'Potting' it on into compost after the roots formed and a Green shoot was growing -it grew quite well during the Summer with lovely shiny leaves but died later ---Never tried it anymore! As Andy has said it does need warmth and constant temperature to germinate and grow.

Its wrapped in damp tissue in a plastic bag in the airing cupboard, and the little nobbly bit that has appeared seems to have got a bit bigger. Thing is I dont know if its a rooty bit or a stemmy bit. The Yanks reckon they get roots first. I really want to pot it up but I dont know which end up to put it

Try sideways like a courgette? Then one can go up and one end down. It can choose. Or do you have to have an uppy bit?

Quick update on the Mango seed - have just had a look at it and there is definatley something happening. The seed is splitting and there seems to be a thing inside it. So I am going to bring some compost inside and let it warm up, then I am going to plant it sideways on and see what happens.........how very exciting ;D

Right then folks update on the mango........ Not much happening I have planted it in a pot full of nice warm compost and watered it in with warm water. It is now covered in cling film (no plastic bags handy!) on the windowsill above the rad in the dining room. Still waiting......
