My OH would love to keep bees too - over my dead body I love seeing them come into the garden and feed off the flowers, but I wouldn't want any hives, garden is too small - that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! Tig

they fascinate me, i could watch them all day, the way some only go to flowers of the same colour, or seem to they have a bee keeping section in our local park, it has loads of hives.

My OH wants to keep bees and I rather like the idea of harvesting our own honey I know that there are different types of bees Greenbean, but really dont know much about them. I was sat by the pond one time and watched with interest as two or three bees were wandering along the pond wall and eventually all went into the same opening in the wall (it's dry stone). What sort of bees would these be?

OOH! I reallyreallyreally want to keep bees and have been in touch with the local group although it is quite a distance away from me. I recently discovered that a colleague of my OH's who is emigrating to Australia was a beekeeper who was looking for a home for his hives - equipment and EVERYTHING! Too late, my OH mentioned it to me...........he is still breathing but it was a close thing.... ;D I have a perfect garden - quite large, rural and planted with LOADS of native plants..I just gotta save up enough dosh to get all the gear needed. What can you tell me, Green bean, please? ;D PS I have been stung twice by a bee and it HURTS...which is the only slightly worrying thing as I have young children playing in the garden......

hi GB, I had a bit of a false start last year when some hives failed to turn up (it's all on here, somewhere) but tonight I got a call from my beebroker to say he's found someone who'll place some hives for the season. I'll report back when (if) it happens, but in the meantime, I would particularly like to site these against a wall facing east. Is there any problem with that? OM. by way of a ps, found it: gardenworld.proboards103.com/index.cgi?board=chat&action=display&thread=3962

Moleskins, Hives faceing east best get em up in the morning, and warm sun on hives first thing, regards greenbean Cheers GB, I'm hoping for 'site inspection' this weekend and glad to hear the one place I can most conveniently put them is the best place for them. Something of a first, that. It's some time (nearly 20 years) since my 'apprenticeship' and like most stuff I find I've forgotten more than I know - I'm looking forward to getting aquainted with bees again, I remember it was very absorbing. One thing you can bring us all up to date on: there were dire predictions of the collapse of the UK bee 'industry' a year or two back, from disease and invasions of predatory bees... what's the current state of play? OM.

Just caught the end of Beyond River Cottage with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstallon and heard them mention that next week it will be looking at Bee keeping. It's on More4 (freeview) and starts at 7.25.

Ok Greenbean, help me reduce the chances of making a complete arse of myself:
I've been taken to see the hives I'm due to get and hope to take delivery very soon. It wasn't until just now I realised in what way they were different to the ones I worked 20 years ago.
They had no landing board (alighting board, I seem to remember it was rather quaintly called) just a postbox-like slit.
I was told back then (and believed) that returning bees used the platform of the board for their 'dance', and that it was an imortant feature.
Has hive design over the past years decided that the landing board is superfluous? I won't introduce this into conversation with mybee-man later if everyone is supposed to know that...
OM.
