Beautiful species of magnolia...there is a pinkish variety called "Susan"
Ideal for pots as they're slow growing and small....although i have seen them 8' x 8' growing in a garden. Probably best to use ericaceous soil and feed with the miracle grow for lime hating plants....once a week in the growing season.
Keep it sheltered and if we get a frost and the flowers are out, just shade it from morning sun to stop the flowers going mushy like Camellias do.
Good luck

I've got one that has been growing in a pot for 4 years now as I wasn't sure where I wanted it in the garden. It has grown very slowly like Andy says but is flourishing and has flowered every year. It is in a fairly large pot - 50cm across and 50cm deep and is planted in ericaceous compost. I just scrape off the top layer of compost each year and put a fresh layer in the pot. I also use a 6 monthly feed that is especially for magnolias, azaleas etc...

Thanks Andy and Jasmine, just what I wanted to know. I'd much prefer to have ask on here than look on different web sites. You find some conflicting and even confusing advise and don't always gets the detail you really need all in one place either. Much prefer hands on real life experiences. Sounds like it's a goer in a pot then I've got some ericaceous compo and feed that I have for my one magnolia. I reckon I'll have some fleece handy to pop over it for protection as and when too. Now the next thing is do I have a pot large enough or will I have to buy a new one ;D

I think you should go to the GC and look for a new pot - I went on the same mission at the beginning of the week and found a pot...and a camellia...and some parsnip seeds...and had to have them all! ;D

Reading through the threads while I have "time out" from toddlers. I'm pleased that all the GC's are closed today and tomorrow, the OG would have to spend a small fortune to shut me up. ;D Still, he would buy a gardenless house Oh, the plants on my wish list!!

Magnolia stellata is a beauty - I've had one for a few years now and it's just starting to open it's buds now. These were taken last year, in April:

I have Magnolia 'Susan' growing in a large pot, it was only a twig when I purchased it in 2006 and I managed to snap the top off it on the way home I read/heard that they can take up to seven years to flower, but this year it has buds x Tig

Tig, I have a Magnolia Susan which has a few purple buds. I bought mine last year from a garden centre for about £6. It is more than a twig so I thought it was quite good value. I bought magnolia "twigs" before for about £2.50 and it really isn't worth it in the end - I'm too impatient to wait seven years.

I bought a Magnolia stellata from a table outside a house for £1.50. Decided to give it to my Sister 'cos she'd always wanted one. 2 Years later it was dead!!! She never looks after anything!!

I'm not saying how much I paid for mine (yet ) - will wait and see if the flowers look like 'Susan' - I know Andy will put me straight if I have made a 'boo-boo'

I have a magnolia stellata which I put into the ground. After 2 years it had hardly grown and only had a couple of flowers.I have had it in my "plant hospital" potted up behind my greenhouse since spring and it is still alive. If I bought a proper pot and mollycoddled it, do you think it is worth preserving? What could its problem be? It hasn't put on any growth, but has leaves ( no flowers this year)

Oh dear Auricula Not sure what it's problem could be but Andy mentioned earlier in this thread that they are slow growing and it's best to use ericaceous soil, and to feed with the miracle grow for lime hating plants once a week in the growing season. Mines done really well in it's pot and has grown quite a lot in a short space of time, it's just losing it's leaves now.
