Hi all, Has anyone ever used Bakkers? They're a garden mail-order firm based in the UK, but now operating in Ireland as well. I got their catalogue, and some of the prices are quite tempting, but their plant notes are so off the wall I'm a bit worried. Any experience out there? ... cheers ...

Hi CC - got them here as well....I ordered once years ago - they may have got better but I wasn't thrilled at all - poor quality and very much a non gardeners place I think, by that I mean that the advice is really a load of rubbish most of the time.

the advice is really a load of rubbish most of the time. RF Thanks RF - that's what had me worried: according to them, Daturas don't need watering, and Bougainvillea can be left out during winter If the quality of the plants is the same as that of the advice, they'll be pretty miserable ... what caught my eye was a (well, supposedly ) evergreen Thunbergia, but I guess I'll stick with seed-dowing ... thanks for that ... cheers ...

I have always been doubtful about Bakkers and have never ordered. Purely because the colours in their photographs are so unrealistic. Obviously done to tempt those who don't know any better. But that may be unfair. I think a neighbour of mine has bought stuff. I'll ask her opinion. Though she buys masses of stuff then doesn't ever get round to planting it.

My first plants were bought from Bakkers 29 years ago! (I thought they were a dutch company?) But the colours in their catalogue were unreal and, as a complete novice, I soon realised that their claims had to be taken with a mountain of salt!!!
Haven't ordered from them, or seen one of their catalogues, for years now so can't comment on the present day.

Didn't they used to be called The Spalding Bulb Company? I fancy that was it. I have certainly bought from SBC in the past but only once from Bakkers. I always find that their catalogue to be rather gaudy which makes it rather difficult to judge flower colours, and are they still using that photo of the small girl holding the apparently giant strawberry? ;D
