Dear All, This is my first post, and I am going to be homeowner for the first time in a few weeks as well! I want to become a proud member here to learn from all your expertise! I have never gardened before, so with a bare back/side yards I am eager to create a beautiful flower garden. Please help me!!! First allow me to show you the yard space in a few pictures. Would you please help me with: (1) Design of the two main area. I hope to have trees for privacy, purple and yellow perennials, and 3-5 rose trees. (2) Help me select the easy-to maintain types in San Diego. Finally, any suggestions you may provide to make this creation process smooth would be greatly appreciated!!! ;D

Looks as thought it worked - well done.
It must be great to be able to start off with a bare canvas. Can you help us with the type of soil that you have perhaps?

May I say that I am proud of myself for having figured it out? Having said that, the picture above shows the layout of my sweet home. The side yard and backyard offer wonderful potentials. The front yard (in front of the fence, large area) is currently covered with gravels, we will worry about it last as it is so large! Now ready for horror pictures? This is the weed-infested side yard when I first saw the house.

Unfortunately I have no idea what type of soil I have... This is another view of the weed, looking in from the back yard.

In the backyard, these are the only two trees it has. I believe the smaller one is a lemon tree? On the narrower side of the house are two palm trees (?)

Nice space you have there Zhuzhu Might be an idea to look at what sort of plants the neighbouring gardens have in them, this would help to find out what grows well. What ideas do you have and what sort of plants do you like

Hello, I would do as Dr Bill says and get a soil tester kit then I would get the strimmer out and get through all those weeds, and see whats underneath, also find out what Zone you live in then you will have a better idea of the types of plants that you can grow. LLLLLove the Palm Trees. Wonder around the neighbour hood and see what they have in their gardens, if you see something you like and dont know what it is just knock on the door and ask them, it looks like a nice place to live you lucky thing.

Hello and welcome from Scotland ;D I have a friend who lives in San Francisco. I visited him in 1991, when he had a little garden but no interest in it. I did it for him, and he has been keen ever since. He can grow plants I can only dream of. Believe it or not, I'll bet there are others like me who are green with envy over your weed covered plot. The chance to make it all your own from scratch is a wonderful opportunity. Rest assured, you will get help here, and friendship too. It is a really good idea to go round your neighbourhood to see what is thriving in other gardens. Also, local garden centres should stock plants suitable for the area. Take your camera. If you don't know the name of a plant, a photo might help us identify it. Many plants that we grow are indigenous to California. Let us know what kind of "look" you want too. Great to see you here. PS One yellow perennial is certainly Verbascum. I saw them growing wild.

Hello Zhuzhu As others have said, we are a truly international board nowadays, although most of us are based in the UK. It's great to see photo's of your new place and what a great opportunity to start something from scratch. I had to do the same when I moved to my current place. I'm not sure how much advice we will be able to give because the climate and such like will be so different but it will be interesting to see how you progress so please keep us up to date with pictures ! zhuzhu Nice to see you, and hello from France. It is a good idea to look at the neighbors gardens to see which plants they are able to grow. I soil testing kit is a good thing too as already has been mentioned.

Hi Zhuzhu Not a lot of help from me as am still a newbie to gardening, but wanted to say Hi and good luck with your garden. It looks like you have a great space there My tips that I got when I started last year were 1. to work out what you need to do in the garden - i.e. seating area/cooking bbq area/rubbish bins storage/compost area 2. decide if you want all flowers/shrubs or if you want a veg patch 3. look around local gardens and in garden centres to see what is growing Hope this helps and good luck with it all Jardack

Hello my garden friends!
I want to check in with a couple of exciting news from San Diego!
1) My honey and I are getting married in the county clerk's office tomorrow ;D ;D! It is so much cheaper to do it this way versus the USD $30K average price tag for a 100 guest wedding (in CA). With the money saved we get to buy a large house for all the gardening of my dream!!!
2) On Saturday we will have the house professionally inspected before finalizing the purchase. I hope the house checks out OK as I really like its amazing potential!
Please please please send me fairy dust for all things to go smoothly this weekend! I need your support and good wishes as I am quite nervous!!!
Thanks very much!!!
Cheers! Z
